Wooden Standing Statues of Kongo Rikishi

A pair of Nio-zo guardians, in open-mouthed and closed-mouthed forms, are enshrined in the main gate of Nishiyama Nikko-ji Temple, which was probably established by Dengyo Daishi in the Enryaku era (782 – 806). The movements of both statues are not violent on the whole and the robe engraving is also moderate. These are rare works among the Nio-zo statues of the Kamakura period for both style and expression.
